しばしば、何かを考えようと思う時に、とにかく人を集めてブレストなるものを開こうとする人がいる。もちろん、ブレインストーミングは、アイデアを出すための有効な手法であり、それ自体を否定するものではない。
ただし、どんな方法でも、正しい使い方、正しい使う人という前提条件が満たされた上で初めてその有効性が発揮されるものだと思う。
今の状況では、何かものを考えなくてはいけない人が、自分で考えたくないのか、自分に考える力がないのかわからないが、何も考えないままに、とにかく人を集めて話をすれば結果が出てくると捉えている。まるで、ブレストは、結果を出せる魔法の杖のようなものと考えている人が多いのではないか。
結局、多くの人で考える際には、タネとなるような考えがしっかり準備されていないと、ブレストはうまくいかない。単なる時間の無駄、楽しい時間にしかならないのではないか。会を主催する人が、事前に汗をかいて、みなで意見を出し合うためのタネを設定する必要がある。そうした努力があった上で、有効に機能するのがブレストであろう。そうでなければ単に参加人数×時間×単価の無駄である。
また集める人も大切である。誰でもブレストに呼んで良いわけではない。パーソナリティのバランスもあるし、話し合うテーマもある。議論したい内容に応じて、適切なメンバーをしっかりと取捨選択した上で開催しないと、単なる雑談になるか、逆に否定合戦になってしまう。
この辺りのことを知ってか知らずか、皆、間違ったやり方に陥っているのではないか。その根底には、自分一人で物事を考える力がない人が多いという問題があるのであろう。皆で考えることが大切であるのは十分理解できるが、その前には、一人で考える力が必要なのである。一人で考えた上で、プラスアルファのアイデアの広がりを求めるときに、ブレストが役立つのだ。
つまり、ある意味での1→10の部分を担うのがブレストであり、0→1は個人なのであろう。ブレストはアイデア創出手法だから、0→1なのではないか？という批判もあろうが、ちょっと次元の違う議論をしているので、それには当たらない。
ただ敢えてブレストが0→1であるとするならば、個人の力で0→0.1を実施した上で、ブレストで0.1→1とするものと言い換えても良いであろう。つまり、ブレストだけで本当の意味で0から有を生み出すことは難しいのである。もちろん、生み出せる可能性はゼロではないが、限りになく小さい。

Often, when someone wants to think about something, there are those who try to gather people and conduct something called brainstorming. Of course, brainstorming is an effective method for generating ideas, and I do not deny its usefulness in itself.
However, I believe that any method, to be effective, must meet the prerequisite conditions of correct usage and the right people using it.
In the current situation, there are people who, for whatever reason, either don’t want to think for themselves or feel they lack the ability to think. They perceive that results will come out just by gathering people and talking without thinking about anything. It’s as if many people consider brainstorming to be like a magic wand that can produce results.
In the end, when thinking with many people, brainstorming doesn’t work well unless well-prepared thoughts that serve as seeds are in place. It might just become a waste of time, not more than a fun time. The organizer needs to sweat beforehand and set the seeds for everyone to brainstorm and share opinions. It would be effective only when such efforts are made. Otherwise, it’s just a waste of the number of participants multiplied by time multiplied by cost.
The people gathered are also important. Not everyone can be invited to brainstorm. There is a balance of personalities, and there are discussion themes. Depending on the content you want to discuss, you need to carefully select appropriate members; otherwise, it may turn into mere chit-chat or even a negation battle.
Whether knowingly or unknowingly, everyone might be falling into the wrong way around these issues. At the root of it, there might be a problem that many people lack the ability to think about things on their own. While it’s understandable that thinking together is important, before that, the ability to think individually is necessary. Brainstorming is useful when seeking an expansion of ideas beyond individual thinking.
In a sense, brainstorming takes on the 1→10 aspect, and 0→1 is individual. Some might argue that brainstorming is a method for idea generation, so it’s 0→1. However, it’s a different discussion, and that doesn’t quite fit.
If we dare to say that brainstorming is 0→1, then we might rephrase it as implementing 0→0.1 individually and then using brainstorming to go from 0.1→1. In other words, generating true value from 0 solely through brainstorming is difficult. Of course, there is a non-zero possibility, but it is extremely small.
